A2L Heat Pumps for Long Island Homes

New heat pumps use lower-GWP A2L refrigerants and are built to heat through a Long Island winter. Add one to your oil boiler or furnace and burn less oil. We're trained and certified for A2L systems.

What changed

The new A2L refrigerants

For years, most home air conditioners and heat pumps ran on R-410A. Under the AIM Act of 2020, the EPA is phasing down HFC refrigerants like it by 85% from historic levels by 2036. Since January 1, 2025, new home and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump systems must use a refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) under 700. Existing R-410A systems can still be repaired and serviced.

Most new systems now use A2L refrigerants such as R-454B (GWP 470) or R-32 (GWP 675), compared with 2,090 for R-410A. "A2L" is a safety class: A for lower toxicity, 2L for lower flammability. These refrigerants are mildly flammable and burn very slowly, so installers need proper training, tools and handling. We're trained and certified for A2L systems and hold EPA 608 certification.

Common questions

Heat pump questions

Can I keep my oil boiler or furnace?
Yes. Many homes add a heat pump and keep the boiler or furnace as backup. NYSERDA's advice is to run the heat pump as your main heat and set the old system's thermostat 3 to 5°F lower, so it only comes on when it's needed.

Will a heat pump keep up in a Long Island winter?
Cold-climate models are built and tested for it. To earn the ENERGY STAR Cold Climate label, a heat pump has to be tested at 5°F. The system also has to be sized and designed for your house, which is what we look at during the estimate.

Do I have to replace my R-410A system now?
No. EPA says existing systems can be maintained and repaired for their useful life. The rule covers new systems. A2L refrigerant can't be put into a system built for R-410A, so when the time comes it's new equipment.

Do you charge for estimates?
Free estimates on new installs and replacements, and that includes heat pump installs. Repairs and service calls are not part of that.
